DESCRIPTION OF BOARD GAME CODENAMES: DUET


 Although spies are supposed to have nerves of steel, they are still human. Tired of the exhausting confrontation, the leading secret intelligence decided to conduct a joint operation to deal with the enemy of a global scale. Meet the sequel to the legendary Codenames - Codenames: Duet!

 This is a cooperative game designed specifically for two, but the spy world is always open to cooperation, so you can save the planet with four. There are 400 new word cards waiting for you to mix and match with the original game cards. The gallery of secret agents has been replenished with new individuals.


BEFORE THE GAME


 The players are located opposite each other. Word cards are laid out on the table in the form of a 5x5 playing field. A stack of agent tiles and an assassin tile are laid out nearby.


MAP OF MISSIONS: AND THE WHOLE WORLD IS LITTLE


 If in the original game our main goal was a local victory over the enemy organization, then in Duet we have to perform various missions around the globe. Each mission is marked on the secret map with a circle. Next to it is indicated the city to which we will go, and two numbers - the conditions of the mission. The first indicates the number of moves, the second - the number of permissible errors. Civilian tokens are converted into turn tokens.

 Next to the playing field, lay out as many turn tokens as the specific mission requires. Tokens for permissible errors are placed with the image of civilians up, others - with the bird up. If the number of moves exceeds 9, use additional blue tokens. Since the author of the Codenames series, Vlaada Hvatil, is from the Czech Republic, the first mission will be Prague. Write the name of your team on the map, and off you go!


BIGGER THAN LIFE IS AT STAKE


 The sides of the key card depict different parts of the city: western or eastern, the old city or its new district. The key card is placed on a stand so that each player can see only his side. On each side, there are 9 contactable agents marked in green. If in the original there is only 1 killer on each side, then in Codenames Duet there are 3 of them at once.


EXPERIENCE OF THE SCOUT


 The goal of the game: to establish contact with 15 agents. Players take turns saying code words and guessing the location of the agents. Unlike Codenames, we can make as many attempts as we want on our turn, regardless of the number in the codeword, as long as we guess correctly. So we have an unlimited number of attempts and a mission map - practically the whole world in our hands, but on the other hand a limited number of turns... Hmm, this is getting interesting.


LET'S ESTABLISH CONTACT


 The life of spies is full of surprises, and anything can happen at any moment in the world of secret agents:


  • if the player reveals an agent, the agent tile is placed on the corresponding division facing the player who made the contact.
  • if the player discovered a civilian, a civilian token is placed on that division facing the player. The position of the token indicates that on this player's side there is a civilian hiding behind the word, but on his partner's side it can be anyone: another civilian, an agent or an assassin. If another player encounters an agent here, his image is placed under the civilian token facing the player who made contact. If the second player also meets a civilian, another civilian token is placed on the division. Both tokens must cover the word that no one else will guess.
  • as in the original, the player can use all attempts and stop guessing. Then he takes a token and places it in front of him bird side up.
  • meeting with the killer still does not promise anything good. Any contact with him means unequivocal death and defeat.


LAST CHANCE


 If, after using all turn tokens, the players have not been able to establish contact with all 15 agents, they no longer receive hints, and build their guesses only on the available information. A meeting with a civilian or a murderer brings defeat.


I DID MY JOB


 When you have guessed all the agents, you can inform your partner and stop giving hints. It's time to throw all your energy into finding the rest of the agents from his side.


MURDEROUS TRIO AND SPY SECRETS


 It seems that there are too many assassins, but this is their weak point. When a killer works alone, he can hide anywhere, but if it is a group of hired killers, then they have to act together, following a certain pattern:


  • the first of the killers is the killer from the other player;
  • the second killer is a civilian from another player;
  • the third assassin is an agent of another player.


 Use this advantage to avoid encountering a civilian and an assassin. It is forbidden to report the location of civilians and killers to your partner.


MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!


 When contact with all agents is established, the mission is considered accomplished and marked with a bird on the map. The players sum up, evaluating their professionalism and effectiveness of teamwork. Well, now you can start the next one. We go to a new city, following the lines on the secret map.
