Description
DESCRIPTION OF THE BOARD GAME PERIODIC: A GAME OF THE ELEMENTS
Just imagine: the chemical elements familiar to us since childhood were discovered 150 years ago by the genius of chemistry D. I. Mendeleev! Therefore, the year 2019 was announced by the UN General Assembly as the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. This event did not pass by the tabletop world either, because in honor of one hundred and fifty years since the birth of calcium, magnesium and their siblings , Igromag localized the educational board game Periodic: A Game Of The Elements.
WHAT IS THE GAME ABOUT?
In the science board game Periodic: A Game Of The Elements in the economy genre, 2-5 amateur chemists have to work their way through the famous table, outdoing each other by using energy, learning the elements and completing scientific tasks. The game is based on the principles of chemistry, which you can learn about from the special booklet "Scientific Aspects of the Game". Practice will take place on the playing field in the form of Mendeleev's table. Other components also fully support the chemical theme - these are flasks, microscopes, discs, energy tokens, laboratories of funny shapes. In addition, all chemical elements are divided into families in a special deck of cards, and real research awaits you on the cards of goals and scientific tasks.
PREPARATION FOR THE GAME
Preparation for the game does not take much time and includes placing the game components on the table and getting the starting inventory from the chemists. After selecting an element family card and reserving it with their microscope, players must locate the selected family on the playing field by placing the bulb on the element with the lowest atomic number. Having chosen one of the received cards of scientific tasks, the players find themselves in full readiness for the chemistry race.
GAME PROCESS
Moves take place one after the other in clockwise order. Each player's turn is divided into two phases, each of which is also divided into two parts:
- During the activation phase of periodic properties, players must spend or gain energy tokens to move the bulb and research elements. To spend energy, you need to spend tokens on the periodic properties that the player wants to activate. The cost of activation increases with each subsequent property. After that, you need to move your bulb by the number of cells in the direction indicated on the property. To get energy, you just need to take all the tokens from the properties, then move the bulb in the given direction. After completing the movement and landing on a chemical element on the target card, the player researches it by laying out his die and thus receives victory points.
- During the refresh phase, objective maps are updated and advancement along the element family and science scales.
You can get additional victory points by completing goals and tasks. Objective cards present players with research conditions, while scientific task cards require players to complete a unique combination of tasks. Accomplishing goals rewards players with additional one-time bonuses that allow them to move the bulb further, activate an unplanned trait, and gain energy tokens.
END OF THE GAME
The game ends when one of the goal decks has run out or two players have moved to the extremes of the science scale. And the most experienced chemist will be determined by the final tally of points.
