DESCRIPTION OF THE BOARD GAME PUERTO RICO 1897

 Puerto Rico 1897 is an updated version of the classic economic board game where players manage plantations and cities in late 19th century Puerto Rico.

 Puerto Rico 1897 is set a year after Puerto Rico gained political autonomy and seceded from the colonial Spanish government. In the game, you take on the role of an independent Puerto Rican farmer in this new era, competing with others to hire workers to grow, sell, and trade valuable crops. You will also be responsible for reviving parts of the country while attempting to build vital urban infrastructure. Your goal throughout the game is to acquire more wealth and prestige than your rivals and become the wealthiest farmer in the entire country. Each player has their own small board with spaces for city buildings, plantations, and resources. Players share three ships, a trading house, a supply of resources, and doubloons.

GAME MECHANICS

 Puerto Rico 1897 uses a rotating phase mechanism, in which the token is passed clockwise to the next player after the end of a turn. The player with the token begins the round by choosing a role and taking the first action. The resource cycle of the game involves players growing crops, which they exchange for points or doubloons. The doubloons can then be used to purchase buildings that allow players to grow more crops or give them other abilities. Buildings and plantations do not function unless they are staffed by workers.

GAME PROCESS

 During each round, players take turns choosing a role card from those on the table (e.g., "Trader" or "Builder"). Once a role is chosen, each player may perform the actions associated with that role. The player who chose the role also receives a small privilege for doing so; for example, choosing the "Builder" role allows all players to build a building, but the player who chose the role can do so at a discount that turn. Unused roles receive doubloon bonuses at the end of each turn, and the next player who chooses that role keeps any doubloon bonuses associated with it. This encourages players to use all roles during a typical turn of the game.

POINTS SET

 Players earn victory points for owning buildings, delivering goods, and occupying "large buildings." Each player's accumulated transport tokens are kept face down and are issued in denominations of one or five. This prevents other players from determining another player's exact score. Goods and doubloons are placed in plain view for other players, and a player can always ask for the total of each. As the game enters its later stages, the unknown number of delivery tokens and their denominations require players to consider their options before choosing a role that could end the game.
