The first word is spread by the first player of their own bones, while others build their game around it. That is, all the bones should touch - like words in a crossword puzzle. In this case, the word can be composed as you want, moving from the first to the last letter in any direction horizontally and vertically, with the proviso that each letter is used only once and that diagonal movement is strictly prohibited. Some fields are bonus and add value to the letter or the whole word, which gives the game acuity.
