Description

DESCRIPTION OF BOARD FOR NORTHWOOD! A SOLO TRICK-TAKING GAME

"For Northwood!" - A subtle tactical game in which you will have conversations with magical forest rulers. You are offered three levels of difficulty and many story scenarios that will make you rack your brains. In each game, you will use 12 of the 24 ruler cards, constantly facing new challenges.

BRIBE FOR ONE PLAYER

In the solo game "For Northwood!" you are trying to peacefully unite a fragmented forest kingdom. To do this, you will visit eight fiefdoms and negotiate with local rulers (play bribes), convincing them to listen to you.

At the beginning of the game, lay out 8 fiefdom cards in order from 0 to 7, and one ruler on each of these cards. Place 4 allies below this row. Shuffle the dialogue cards and take 8 cards into your hand.

GAME PROCESS

Each time the player chooses an unvisited fief to visit. If desired, he can replace allies with friendly rulers. Next, he conducts dialogues with the ruler of the chosen fief to win the required amount of bribes. If he wins the required amount of bribes at the end of the visit, that emperor becomes friendly. The player repeats the previous steps until he visits all fiefdoms.

DIALOGUES

After choosing a fiefdom and deciding which 4 allies (or friendly rulers) you need, you dialogue (play bribes) with the ruler of that fiefdom until one of you runs out of cards.

In each individual dialogue, the emperor plays 1 card and you play 1 card in return. Each ruler also has a favorite topic of conversation, i.e. his suit.

  1. In each dialogue, you can apply the property of only one unactivated ally by turning the card (activating it).
  2. Take the top card of the dialogue deck and place it face up until the discard pile. This is the emperor's statement.
  3. Choose 1 card from your hand to play back. You must respond with a card of the same suit as the ruler's declaration (if possible). If you can't play a suit, play any card.
  4. You win a bribe if:

  • in response, you played the highest card of the same suit as the ruler's declaration, OR
  • the ruler's statement matches the suit of the ruler's own card, and your card matches that suit.

        5. If you won a trick, put your answer card in the trick pile (face up), otherwise put it to the discard pile.

END OF THE VISIT

The visit ends when the cards in the player's hand or in the deck run out. The player counts the number of cards in the bribe pile:

  • If this number is equal to the number on the map of the fief, then its emperor becomes friendly.
  • If the number of cards in the bribe pile is not equal to the number on the fief card, then the visit ended in failure. You need to remove this emperor from the game and turn the fief card face down.

The player removes all replacement rulers from the game (regardless of whether they applied their properties or not). The cards of all activated allies must be returned to the upright position.

The player shuffles all dialogue cards into the deck and takes 8 new cards. He then chooses the next fief to visit.

END OF THE GAME

The game ends after the player has visited all 8 fiefdoms. Each friendly fief gives him as many victory points as the number of stars shown on his map. The player counts the total number of points to determine their final score. He wins if he gets 16 or more points. You can also choose the difficulty level before starting the game to set the minimum number of points needed to win.

SCENARIOS

Once you've learned the normal game well, you can choose any scenario from the booklet. All of them are independent. Listed in order of increasing complexity. Each scenario has its own preparation and additional victory condition. Before starting the game, decide whether you want to play with the additional condition or not. After training, play a normal game (visit 8 fiefdoms, score 16+ points, etc.) while following all the special rules of the scenario.
