DESCRIPTION OF THE BOARD GAME GREAT WESTERN TRAIL 

 Welcome to the Wild West, the land of majestic canyons, barren deserts and endless plains. In the courtyard of the 19th century - the times of cowboys and Indians. However, don't rush to get your Colts and Tomahawks, Great Western Trail is a strategic, economic and logistical board game from Alexander Pfister, in which players must manage the race of cattle from Texas to Kansas City, loading them onto freight trains and onward transportation.

 Game participants will appear in the role of ranch owners, they will hire workers, buy cattle, build buildings, manage the race process, get money for it to buy cattle again, etc. The more cattle you can race and the more valuable they will be, the more they will receive money and victory points.

WHAT'S IN THE BOX

 Inside the box you will find many components: a deck of cards with cows, tiles of workers, buildings, obstacles, wigwams, a common playing field, personal tablets of ranchers, wooden action and resource tokens, coins, etc. Just look at how beautiful everything is it looks exploded.

WHAT'S NEW

 The second edition received a fresh design, a single game variant, two-layered lancets and several new buildings (#11 and #12). 12 exchange tokens were rolled over from the add-on to the updated version. Inside you'll also find cloth token pouches and 4 new Station Master tokens.

 If you are a real cowboy, then your attitude towards cows should be very serious. Therefore, the old breeds of cows were replaced by new ones that correspond to the historical context. Added a new breed of cows — Simmental.

FLOW OF THE GAME

 Each participant receives at his disposal a personal tablet, on which current records of the state of his affairs are kept:

 Hired workers (cowboys, builders and engineers), a list of available actions, the company's certification level and an indicator of the current phase of the player's turn: moving the cowboy around the playing field, performing actions and choosing cards.

 Each of the employees has his own function. Cowboys are needed to purchase cows of more expensive breeds. The more builders, the more functional buildings they are able to build, and engineers will agree on railway races. The search for employees and their hiring is carried out at the labor exchange.

 So, the participants need to overcome the path from Texas to Kansas City and drive there the cows they have. After driving their first herd and making some money, they return to Texas, buy new cows and drive them back to Kansas. During the entire game, the participants will make 5-7 such races. At intermediate locations, players will build auxiliary buildings to simplify and make overtaking more profitable.

 At the beginning of the game, neutral buildings are placed on the field, accessible to everyone. Over time, players will build their personal buildings, which will help them buy more cows, keep them clean, move faster through the race, overcome obstacles (rockfalls, droughts and floods), etc. To activate the effect of the building, the player must reach this location, and fulfill the necessary conditions for its activation.

 The cattle card deck consists of nine different breeds of cows and bulls. At the beginning of the game, the owners of the ranch receive cards of 4 breeds of cattle - this is their first herd for the race.

 There are also goal cards in the game. Participants who have fulfilled the goals receive additional bonuses, and those who have not fulfilled them are fined. These goals are not related to the global goal of the game - the cow race, but have a more local level: build a house, trade with the Indians, etc.

 At the end of the game, all the possessions of the cowboys are converted into victory points: coins, buildings, railway stations, completed objectives, etc. The player with the maximum number of them wins.

WHO IS THE GAME FOR?

 Great Western Trail is a serious strategic board game in which players need to think a lot, plan moves and be able to build a flexible business model that can adapt to changing realities. Lovers of Alexander Pfister's work will definitely like it, and in particular the game Mombasa, which in 2016 collected almost all world board awards. However, in the Great Western Trail game, everyone will find something for themselves, for some it will seem like a complicated Ticket to Ride, and for others a simplified version of Mombasa.
